In an unequal world, our help is vital
Steve Sanderson, Chair of Trustees, introduces this year’s Annual Review.
Dear friend,
If you had to guess, how much do you think our country spends on health per person? According to the World Bank, £45 per person per year is the minimum that a country should be spending in order to provide a package of basic health services. The UK spends over £3,000 per person. In stark contrast, low-income countries are spending only £13 per person.
The recent loss of global aid funding has contributed to this, leaving a chronic gap in services for many communities. MAI has a vital role to play here. In 2025, we had the privilege of standing with some of the poorest communities around the world and helping to ensure that access to quality health care continues.
However, in 2025, what made me proudest was that MAI was a movement of fellowship. We have the privilege of walking with the Godly men and women who lead the hospitals and clinics that we support – heroes of faith who provide compassionate leadership in the face of unimaginable challenge. Heroes who rely on our prayers and support.
This is why MAI’s supporter family is so vital, not just as donors – and you were indeed very generous in 2025 – but because many of you also pray, visit, and encourage those on the front line. Whatever part you have played this year, you are a part of the stories in this annual review.
Within MAI, we know that God has been present with us and has remained faithful in all things. In the face of the inequality which we see in ever greater measure, we trust in the goodness of a loving and just God. And that continues to make all the difference.

Thank you fundraisers. Charlotte Wong took on the challenge of running at least 5k every day in December in the cold Scottish winter, and raised £1,941 to help the Guinebor 2 Hospital in Chad open a new prosthetics and orthotics service. Thank you Charlotte!
Thank you volunteers. Claire Barratt and John Earwicker organised the MAI Report Back Evening in October last year which raised over £2,000. They have also organised a Dinner and Auction to raise funds for the Embo Clinic this year. Thank you Claire and John!
