South Africa: “Metrina’s care has been life-saving”
“Metrina’s care has been life-saving,” Lerato says.
Lerato is in her 60s. She fell and suffered a severe spinal injury, and she had to spend months in hospital.
Before her accident she had been a domestic worker, but she has not been able to go back to work due to ongoing medical issues. All of her relatives are unemployed, a problem sadly facing 50% of people in Embo.
But MAI-supported community caregiver Metrina has been helping Lerato ever since the day of her accident. On the day Lerato fell, Metrina organised Lerato’s transportation to the hospital and accompanied her. Metrina visited Lerato in the hospital, and after she was discharged, Metrina came to Lerato’s house every day to help her. She also brought food parcels for Lerato and her family – support she would not get from anyone else.
“I do not know how I may show my deepest appreciation to Metrina,” Lerato says.

Metrina and the Community Caregiver Team would not be able to carry out their vital, often life-saving, work without the support of people like you.
