Twice Gold: Moussa’s story
The little boy on the cover of our Twice Gold booklet this year is Moussa from Chad. He didn’t know it, but Moussa came dangerously close to losing his mother.
Although Moussa’s delivery went smoothly, his mother, Zahara, became seriously ill shortly afterwards – a few days after the birth she couldn’t walk or even stand. She had pre-eclampsia, a condition that is life-threatening if left untreated.
Her family rushed Zahara back to the Guinebor 2 Hospital, where she had given birth. Her treatment by our incredible partners there saved her life. “I am grateful to be alive,” she says.

One in 15 women in Chad will die from pregnancy-related complications. But if midwives are able to give pregnant women ongoing medical care, survival rates drastically increase.
This is why MAI supports G2 to subsidise the cost of treatment – so that even the poorest mother can access the vital care of G2’s midwives and other medical staff.
Our Twice Gold appeal has now finished for this year, but you can still give a gift to help others like Zahara and Moussa to receive life-saving care.
- £60 could fund safe births for four mothers
