India: Ghamabai’s first visit to a hospital in 40 years
When Ghamabai started struggling to breathe, she turned to local “healers” for help. The “healers” branded Ghamabai in the area of her lungs, saying it would drive out the evil spirits causing the problem. They did nothing but leave her with scars.
Eventually, someone told her about Chinchpada Christian Hospital (CCH). At age 40, Ghamabai had never been to a hospital before – she didn’t think she could afford it. Ghamabai lives in an extremely poor and remote part of India, where over 70% of people live on less than £1.50 a day.
At CCH, she was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a serious lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe. After blood transfusions, oxygen support in the ICU, care and love, Ghamabai finally started to feel better.

Give the priceless gifts of hope and healing to twice as many people like Ghamabai
COPD is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Without help, Ghamabai’s condition would have steadily worsened.
The support of people like you helped to pay for Ghamabai’s treatment – and saved her life.
Will you give to save the lives of other critically ill people like Ghamabai?
The great news is that, as part of our Twice Gold appeal, every £1 you give in October will become £2, thanks to our generous appeal patrons.
- £30 could pay for a doctor for a day, trained to provide compassionate critical care for patients like Ghamabai (doubled to two days)
- £150 could fund five days’ ICU care, which is how long the average patient stays in the ICU (doubled to help two patients).
