Twice Gold: A mother survives
Be a beacon of healing… for those with deadly diseases
Halime was so sick that she couldn’t walk when she arrived at the Guinebor II Hospital.
She had been unwell for a month, but she lives a day’s drive away from the hospital and didn’t want to leave her young daughter. She had been to local clinics in search of help, and they had given medicine for her symptoms – chills, fever and weakness – but no one could tell her the cause.
As her condition worsened, Halime’s relatives finally helped her to make the journey to the Guinebor II Hospital, leaving her daughter with her grandmother. When she arrived, she was diagnosed with severe malaria anaemia. She was given several blood transfusions, and began to regain her strength. “I am very grateful for the good care I have received,” she says.
If left untreated, Halime’s condition could have killed her. Malaria is a leading cause of death in Chad, and malaria anaemia is particularly dangerous for women with growing families, as it can make any blood loss during childbirth potentially fatal. This not only makes the prevention and treatment of malaria vital, but also increases the need for skilled midwives, like Bonté (left) and Mélanie pictured above, to help women during pregnancy and birth.
