Twice Gold: “I had no hope she would survive”

Be a beacon of life… for those on the brink

A traditional healer promised Sbongile that they would cure her intestinal problems.

Sbongile believed that her condition was caused by spirits, and waited six days for her healing to come – but it didn’t. If she hadn’t been found by Nduna, a Neighbourhood Health Carer trained by the Embo clinic, her condition may have become life-threatening. “I had no hope she would survive,” Nduna says.

The Neighbourhood Health Carer project aims to have someone in every community in Embo who is trained to give basic support to those with health problems. The Neighbourhood Health Carers are also able to connect those who have serious conditions with the Embo Clinic, where they can receive the vital care they need.

Nduna contacted Community Caregiver Matrina, and together they took Sbongile to the Embo Clinic. She was then referred for surgery in a local hospital. She is now recovering, and continues to be supported by the clinic’s caregivers. “I learned the meaning of love from Nduna,” Sbongile says.
