Given the tricky terrain of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, a lot of work is needed to ensure a stable site for the much needed Clinic in Embo. Following the levelling of the site, a team – led by Alex from Johannesburg – is creating two massive retaining walls which will stabilise the soil ahead of the rains which can wash ground away and ruin previous levelling efforts. Amazingly, the lower retaining wall has been created relatively cheaply. Usiing a tried and tested solution on other parts of the valley site, the team have created a retaining wall with tyres tied together, filled with soil and solidified with a polymer. A rock solid job! In addition, electricity and water supplies are being created so that, once building commences later in 2014, things can proceed rapidly.
