Helping people with HIV and AIDS to live well
‘I found a strong motivation to live again. I want to thank the team for changing my life.’
– Reshma, HIV patient
In Nepal, we partner with United Mission to Nepal (UMN) to improve the lives of people with living with HIV, reduce the spread of the disease, and address the damaging stigma that surrounds it.
This programme is based in the Sunsari and Rupandehi districts of Nepal’s southern Terai region. Although the national numbers of people with HIV are not high, there is a concentrated epidemic in these border areas, where many truckers, sex workers, labour migrants and people injecting drugs live.
Lack of knowledge coupled with widespread fear and discrimination make living with HIV in Nepal a huge challenge. Late diagnosis and low treatment rates often lead to patients becoming too ill to keep working.
UMN is rising to this challenge in several highly effective ways. Firstly, they help people with HIV to get the antiretroviral treatment they need, showing them how to manage their medication, diet and lifestyle so they can recover their strength.
They also help address the poverty that can result from HIV-related illness and stigma. So they support people to set up small businesses, and provide the school materials children need to stay in school.
Getting the facts out about HIV and AIDS is also essential, so UMN train peer educators tell adolescents, young adults and migrant workers about how HIV is transmitted, and how it can be avoided.
This joined-up approach means people living with HIV can enjoy a much better quality of life, no longer rejected by neighbours or loved ones. The wider community, too, is becoming much more informed about HIV and ways to prevent its spread.
