The man pictured above had been abandoned by his live-in girlfriend. His neighbour was concerned because she could hear him coughing and so contacted one of the church Caregivers, Mamlungiswa. When she arrived, she found the man in a very poor state of health. He was unable to get out of bed with sores around his mouth and a number of bed sores on his back. The bed was wet through and he was unable to speak properly, just mumbling.
The supervising nurse Joyce worked with Mamlungiswa to clean him and to take his vital signs. He was driven in the team vehicle to the Clinic where he was further assessed and treated. The sister in charge then arranged for him to be transferred to hospital where he was found to be HIV positive and suffering from TB. He is still in hospital but recovering well, thanks to the fantastic support that is now available through the church on the ground and MAI’s funding and training support.
