One of the greatest challenges that the Caregivers face in Embo with HIV positive men is the rate of defaulting from continuing with medication. Thomas was diagnosed as HIV+ 8 years ago. The Team arranged for him to receive antiretroviral treatment. When he improved as a result, he stopped taking his medication! As a result, he developed TB, mouth sores and frequent stomach problems. Gertrude, his Caregiver, took him to the Bothas Hill clinic in the MAI funded vehicle. From there, he was taken to Hospital but he refused to be admitted, saying he would be better at home where Gertrude is now supporting Thomas’ wife. Gertrude reports that, at least, he has agreed to resume his ARV treatment and is making steady improvement.
