In order to register clients, a full clinical assessment is undertaken in Ngora province. This includes noting previous history and making a full physical examination. The Nurse who supervises the entire project while working part time, funded by MAI, has to undertake these assessments before the rest of the team can take over the symptom treatment.
In one such assessment recently, a 13 year old girl was found to be much worse than had been reported following an earlier hospital visit. Scovia had been diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia but Nurse Rose found extensive cellulitis on her legs. She would only sit on the verandah from the moment of waking until the evening. She was refusing to change her position because of the severe pain such activity was causing her.
Now, with a fuller, more accurate diagnosis, the Team have begun a regime of treatment to improve her physical and mental state.
